Pregnancy and chiropractic

Pregnancy is, clearly, a time of great changes, both physical and chemical, in a woman’s body.

This not only has an effect in terms of weight gain or the shift in her centre of gravity: the spine becomes more flexible with the production of relaxin, a hormone whose role is to relax the pelvic ligaments to prepare them for birth.

If there is already a previous imbalance, these changes can increase discomfort. Chiropractic care helps the nervous system, through the spine, transmit its impulses with the least possible interference, favouring a more balanced spine during this stage.

The discomforts so common in this period —heavy legs, lower back or pelvic tension— are largely caused by the changes in gravity, position and flexibility of the spine. Chiropractic is a natural way to support the body in reducing these discomforts, with the aim of making these months more bearable and being able to carry on with daily activity.

By adjusting the spine, we work on vertebral subluxations —small changes in the function of the vertebrae— favouring the body’s self-regulation. During pregnancy, a subluxation caused by mechanical stress (change of centre of gravity, weight gain), chemical stress (hormonal changes) or emotional stress (fears, expectations, moods) is very common.

Chiropractic support pays special attention to the pelvis and the lower back, which are particularly involved in the whole process, aiming for them to be in balance and to function in a unified way.

Note: chiropractic care during pregnancy does not replace the follow-up of your midwife or gynaecologist, but rather complements it. Get in touch with us and we’ll assess your case calmly.
